Eliza and the Bear’s new single ‘Upon The North’, as seen and heard above, encapsulates the joyous instrumentation and powerful vocal melodies that propel this band, allowing them to be as exciting on record as they are live.

Dominated by chants of the refrain “I spent summers away, hiding in rivers and lakes”, it’s a nostalgia trip back to teenage dreams.

It’s clear from the music alone that this is a close-knit group of friends, and there’s something in their obvious ease around each other that allows their performances to be spectacularly tight, as anyone who’s seen the live video for ‘The Southern Wild’ can attest: where euphoric brass sections juxtapose bright piano and layered guitars, soaring to a glorious cacophony of a climax.

With no pressure to perform coming from outside the band or within, and their only explicit desires being to make great music and have fun, the group gathered together and swapped the front room in London where they’d demoed their first track ‘Trees’ for a Devon studio to record their impressive brand of folk-pop at the hands of renowned producer Peter Miles.

January saw Eliza and the Bear performing their first ever headline show in the setting of London’s St Pancras Old Church, a particularly special venue to make their live bow for 2013. The gig was an intimate, uplifting affair, capable of banishing the post-Christmas blues for all its attendees.

We can’t wait for them to bring their jubilant sound to Middlesbrough.
